At ELECTRA Universe, we can answer that question. And the answer is unlike anything else in sustainable luxury beachwear today.
Organic bamboo: the fabric that gives itself back
Our dresses are handcrafted in Bali using certified organic bamboo — one of the most rapidly renewable natural fibres on earth. Bamboo grows without pesticides, without irrigation, without destroying its own root system. It sequesters more carbon than cotton and requires a fraction of the water. As a fabric, it is extraordinarily soft, naturally temperature-regulating, and gentle against skin.
But organic bamboo carries a quality that goes beyond its cultivation. It is fully biodegradable. Under the right composting conditions, a pure organic bamboo dress breaks down completely within four to six months — returning its nutrients to the soil, leaving nothing harmful behind. No microplastics. No synthetic residue. No waste.
This is what genuine circular fashion looks like. Not recycled synthetic fibres that still shed microplastics into the ocean. Not "biodegradable" blends that take decades and industrial conditions to break down. A dress that was always meant to return.

Not everything in an ELECTRA Universe piece is meant to return to earth. The sustainably harvested cowrie shells that our Balinese artisans work by hand — the detail that makes each piece unmistakable — are a different story entirely.
Shells do not decompose. They endure. And so in the ELECTRA Returns programme, every shell from a returned piece is carefully separated and reimagined into new designs. The same shell that adorned your dress becomes part of something new — carrying a small piece of its history forward into another life, another body, another summer.
This is not sentiment. It is precision. The shells are sorted, cleaned and returned to our Balinese artisans to be incorporated into the next collection. Zero waste is not a target. It is the design.
Introducing ELECTRA Returns
ELECTRA Returns is our take-back programme — and it has no expiry date. Whether you bought your piece last season or years ago, you can return it to us. It does not matter where you are in the world. It does not matter whether the label says ELECTRA Universe or our previous name, Eco Gypsy. Every piece is welcome.
When your garment arrives back with us, the cowrie shells are removed by hand and catalogued for use in future designs. The organic bamboo dress is prepared for composting — either through our own programme or in partnership with composting initiatives in Bali. The resulting compost is used to nurture the plants and soil of the island where the piece began its life.
Wear it for one season or ten. Return it whenever you are ready. The programme has no deadline and no conditions — only the commitment that nothing will go to landfill.
Why this matters now
In 2026, sustainability is no longer a niche. It is an expectation. Consumers of eco luxury resort wear and ethical beachwear are increasingly aware — and increasingly unforgiving of brands that use the language of sustainability without the substance to back it up.
