Sensual Sustainabilty: A Way of Life

ELECTRA Universe is not a brand I step into and out of. It is a reflection of the entire life I have lived and the ebbs and flows of my sustainability journey, the way I move through the world, the materials I choose, the places I am drawn to, the communities I work within, and the way I understand the body and what it needs.

I do not separate how I live from what I create. ELECTRA Universe is not a brand I step into and out of. It is a reflection of the entire life I have lived and the ebbs and flows of my sustainability journey, the way I move through the world, the materials I choose, the places I am drawn to, the communities I work within, and the way I understand the body and what it needs.
Sensual Sustainability is not a concept I defined and then built a brand around. It is the condition I already live within. It predates the brand. It is simply how things have always been in my vision of the way we can live ethically on the earth. I have spent twenty-five years moving through the places that shape this work. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, The Maldives, UK, Europe & Malaysia — not as a visitor passing through, but as someone who is born of mixed blood, learns languages, builds relationships, and understands how things are made and where they come from. This is not research. It is life. And it is from this kind of immersion that the brand was built.

The places I am drawn to reflect the same logic. Through my career as a travel journalist, I have always been on a mission to make sustainable travel aspirational and beautiful — where the protection of communities and endangered species feels less like a curated experience and more like a reminder of what land looks like when it is genuinely cared for. I was told after my Masters in Sustainable Tourism & Development, at multiple massive name publications in London that it would never catch on so I started an online travel magazine as Eco Gypsy and now the journey continues under my name.

What connects these places is not luxury in the conventional sense. It is coherence. Nothing feels unnecessary. Everything present has been considered in relation to everything else -room, landscape, structure, silence - functioning as one language rather than separate elements competing for attention. This is the version of luxury I understand. Not decoration. Not scale. Intention. The people I am drawn to operate within the same understanding — and they are not people who talk about sustainability. They are people who have built systems around it and live inside them.

Sungai Watch was founded in Bali to address one of the most urgent environmental problems in Southeast Asia: plastic waste entering the ocean through rivers. Indonesia is one of the world's largest contributors to ocean plastic, and Sungai Watch has developed a network of river barriers that intercept waste before it reaches the sea. The scale of what they have built is extraordinary. The clarity of the problem they are solving is equally so. ELECTRA Universe is partnering with Sungai Watch, contributing five percent of profits to their work — not as a donation or a gesture, but as a structural commitment to the rivers and coastlines that the communities and materials we work with depend on.

The Sea Gypsy tribes of Sulawesi, the Bajau people, are among the last true maritime nomads on earth. Their relationship with the ocean is not resource management. It is kinship, built over centuries of living on and from the water. I work directly with these communities. Every shell used in ELECTRA designs is naturally harvested, CITES certified, and traceable from the shore where it was found to the studio in Bali where it is finished by hand. The relationship is personal. I know the people. I understand the conditions. I have been to the places where this work happens. When I say ethical sourcing, that is what I mean, not a supply chain audit, but a relationship built over time. In Bali, the artisans who make the garments are part of the same logic. These are skilled craftspeople working within a tradition of textile and material production that is specific to the region. The bamboo they work with is certified organic, grown in regenerative Indonesian forests, harvested in a way that allows the plant to regenerate without replanting. In its natural form it is biodegradable, compostable, and entirely of the earth it came from. The dresses ELECTRA makes from it are designed with that end in mind, not disposed of but returned.
My materials come from within this world because I live within this world. Bamboo is not a symbolic choice. It is a material I understand through living in proximity. I have seen it used as scaffolding across construction sites, as the structural support for homes, as the material from which entire villages are built across Indonesia. I have studied it. I have worn it. I understand how it moves and breathes and behaves against skin in humid heat and is hypoallergic, antibacterial and our organic materials mean no toxins are absorbed by the skin.

Wellness sits within the same symbiosis as my surroundings. Coconut as nourishment and traditional medicine - something I grew up alongside my life in Asia as a child and my studies of Ayurvedic practice in Trivandrum for my undergraduate thesis. Hydration as rhythm. Fasting as clarity. The body not as something to manage after disruption, but something to listen to before disruption occurs. These are not wellness trends. They are systems that have existed in these cultures for centuries, and that I have practised long enough to understand.
ELECTRA Returns is our new programme. It is a system that defines continuation — where garments do not end at the point of ownership but return into a process that acknowledges material as something that must continue in another form. Shells reimagined into new designs. Bamboo composted in Bali or at home with our guide. Nothing disposed of that was made with this much intention and return anytime for life.

This is Sensual Sustainability. Not as statement. Not as aesthetic framing. As the structure through which everything has already been lived - the way place is chosen, how materials are selected, how communities are worked with, how the body is considered, and how time is experienced through objects and environments that carry genuine meaning.
ELECTRA Universe is that way of living made visible. It is not separate from how I live. It is the result of that continuity made material and a world we inhabit at ELECTRA Universe and I am just its expression. Because there is no separation between the system and the life that creates it.
